The Met Gala 2023: The Biggest Night in Fashion

Mark your calendars because one of the biggest nights in fashion is happening, Monday, May 1, 2023. The annual Met Gala will take place in New York City, and we are predicting some of celebrities and iconic looks that we hope to see this year.

For those who are not familiar, the Met Gala is an annual charity fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Institution. What makes the Met Gala stand out among any other charity event? Well, maybe it’s the A-list attendees, the iconic venue, or the intricate and detailed dedication to the changing fashion theme each year. Yes, you read that correctly, each year a new theme is assigned to the fashion designers, and it is their job to interpret and incorporate the theme into their designs as they see fit. Past themes have included, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion (2021), Camp: Notes on Fashion (2019), and Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination (2018).

So, what is the highly anticipated theme for 2023? For this year’s Met, the theme is a tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, an influential German creative fashion director of Chanel. “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” will be the inspiration for brands and designers who pair up with different celebrities in a range of different fields. Lagerfeld took over Chanel in the early 80’s and completely revived the iconic brand Chanel, creating the empire that we now see today. Not only did he revitalize the fashion and overall image of Chanel, he also implemented the iconic double “C” logo that is now a staple of the brand. Working with Chanel was just one of the many impressive feats that he completed in the fashion world.

As with every red-carpet event, we see celebrities who completely hit the mark and follow the trends perfectly, whereas others can tend to fall flat. The Met Gala has produced some of the most iconic fashion looks to date and is a testament to fashion designers from all over the world. We have curated some of the most iconic looks from previous Met Gala’s and given some predictions of celebrities who we think will completely nail the theme for this year.

Blake Lively

Little needs to be said about the honorary queen of the Met Gala. Blake Lively has continued to prove year after year why she is at the top of the best dressed lists. We have no doubt that she will not only be on theme but will do it flawlessly. In the past, Lively has worked with Versace since 2017 and since then her outfits have not disappointed. We are expecting nothing other than a Versace look this year, perfectly on theme.

Lady Gaga

While Lady Gaga could not attend the 2022 Met Gala, we have our fingers crossed that she will be in attendance for 2023. In the past, Gaga has not only stayed on theme, but has gone above and beyond, making sure to stand out against the rest. She has worked with designers such as Alexander Wang and Brandon Maxwell, and brands such as Versace and Balenciaga. We are predicting another Alexander Wang design, maybe even from Versace?

Jared Leto

When it comes to extra, Jared Leto knows how it’s done. Leto has continued to grace the Met Gala carpet with his extravagant fashion w devious, such as bringing a fake head (identical to his own) with him onto the carpet in 2019. In the past he has worked with Alessandro Michele, the creative director of Gucci, who even twined with Leto at the 2022 Met Gala. If in attendance, it is safe to assume that for 2023, Leto will be working alongside Michele again with Gucci.

Rihanna

Who can forget Rihanna’s iconic Margiela Pope-inspired Heavenly Bodies attire at the 2018 Met Gala? We didn’t. Riri was relieved of her Met Gala duties last year since she was in her third trimester of pregnancy, but we expect her in full theme this year after coming out of retirement for the Super Bowl halftime show. In her last appearance on the Met red carpet in 2021, she wore an all-black, Balenciaga design by Demna Gvasalia. This year, we are predicting she works with a new brand, maybe Louis Vuitton or Givenchy?

Billie Eilish

One of the youngest artists in attendance of the Met, we are looking forward to Billie Eilish’s third ever Met Gala. In the past, Eilish has turned heads in her designs from Oscar de la Renta (2021) and Gucci (2022). Despite being a new comer to the Met, Eilish has completely nailed the themes each year and we expect nothing less from her this year. In the past she has worked with two different brands and this year, we are predicting that she works with a new brand this year as well. Perhaps, she nails the theme completely by wearing an ensemble by Chanel?
