Your single, “Back For More” has emotional and heartfelt lyrics in it about meeting the person that's right for you. When you think about writing a song, especially this single, where do you draw inspiration from?

This song kind of was inspired by a few different things, but typically I'm writing based off of my own experiences. Things that I'm thinking about, conversations I'm having with people, or books that I'm reading occasionally. The first kind of seed of the idea for “Back For More” came after I had a romantic relationship with someone about a year ago where I felt like we had such a strong friendship connection, which, I feel, is really special to find. In general, it's hard to find people that you really vibe and connect with. And I felt like we had this strong kind of friendship connection that felt very familiar. I was listening to a podcast by psychologist, Dr. Alexandra Solomon, who talks about how love is both in and out of our control; we can't control who we meet or when, but we can control how we show up and how we respond and if we want to engage with that person. I just love that idea of finding someone that you have a special connection with and I am a hopeless romantic. I really value love and relationships and growing and healthy relationships and stuff, so for me, it was a story about finding someone that you connect with on that deep kind of friendship soul level and taking the risk of engaging in it, knowing that you might not meet someone that you connect with in the same way again.

Can you walk us through the process you go through when writing a new song? What are some of the things that you gravitate towards when you're writing?

I grew up singing and I didn't start writing songs until I was like, 18. I'm 29 now, but I didn't put out any music until 2020. I'm really new to releasing music, so I feel like in certain ways that has helped me because I kind of just follow my own process. I am primarily a singer; I usually start all of my songs Acapella. When I have a lyric that comes to me first and I will just kind of sit on it, and then I'll either set aside time to work on it or I will just start singing what I feel like the lyric feels like. I'll usually get a solid hook written down and sometimes I will bring in another songwriter. Since moving to Nashville, I've got to work with a lot of other really cool songwriters and then I will finish the song in its entirety, and then I'll bring it to a producer and we'll take it from there to elevate it and see if it can be a song. It's not the common way of having people write songs, but it's worked really well for me because if a song doesn't feel catchy just singing it Acapella or on a piano, it's not going to be a good song.

I keep lots of ideas and lyrics on my notes app and I mostly write about relationship dynamics and stories about the past and how they influence the present. I'm super obsessed with psychology and attachment theory and conscious relationships so I try to bring that stuff into my music. I feel like I am in the pop world so there is a fine line, of making something catchy and digestible, but bringing your own sense of depth to it.

Do you have any plans for releasing more music this year and some of your goals that you have for 2023 going forward?

I am currently working on a full length project. It's nine songs, and it's my first full length album that I'll be putting out independently. I'm going to release a series of singles, “Back For More” will be on the project. Hoping to release it in the summer, but it might be more like fall. We're in the final mixing and mastering stage. I am hoping to do a small local tour after here in Nashville and possibly make a music video. The plan is definitely to release more music. I'm really excited about it!
