Throughout season three, Ashley Park's character has continued to prove why she's the true star of the Netflix show, Emily in Paris.
The third season of Netflix's hit series Emily in Paris hit the platform this past Wednesday, and as expected, I've already finished it. There's something about the 20-minute episode series that just demands to be treated like a movie. Meaning, I need to watch it in one sitting.
And while Emily Cooper's (Lilly Collins) outlandish and somehow successful fashion looks continue to capture all the attention, this season's focus lies on Emily's best friend, roommate, and Paris local guide, Mindy Chen (Ashley Park). A rising singer, Mindy becomes inseparable with Emily once she arrives to Paris. She becomes a sort of "Paris guru" to Emily, helping her navigate French everyday life, relationships, night life, and more importantly, the culture.
And while Mindy proves to be a true friend throughout the whole series, she has fallen behind the scenes at times. The third season fixed that. Mindy gets the spotlight at a fancy jazz club, her wardrobe gets an upgrade, and she also meets a new romantic prospect in millionaire businessman and former boarding school classmate, Nicolas de Leon (Paul Forman).
Despite all her success, Mindy's true jump to stardom this season lies in her friendship with Emily. Time after time, she proves that she's someone who's got her back, and gives us very important lessons on how to be a great friend IRL.
When Mindy Received An Offer To Play Solo
On season two, Mindy meets two artists on the street and after discovering they have so much in common, they decide to form a band. With the help of Emily, the band eventually starts booking gigs and making their presence known in the Paris music scene. Mindy even starts dating the guitarist, Benoit (Kevin Dias).
The band books a gig at this fancy jazz club. While it's just for one night, the owner is fascinated with the band, more specifically, Mindy's performance. So, he offers her a position to perform as a regular at the club, but the deal does not include her band. Mindy turns it down and doesn't tell the rest of the band so they don't feel bad. But when the owner contacts Benoit, he insists that Mindy takes the opportunity since it's a big thing for her career.
We love a healthy relationship.
When Mindy Told Emily To Mind Her Business
Some of you will disagree with my take on this, but I think Mindy made the right move when she discouraged Emily from telling Gabriel about the fling. She even jokes about it to keep the severity out of the situation. While some may agree that Emily had a duty to Gabriel as a friend, telling him about the fling would have only made things worse.
If you remember season two, Emily almost damaged her friendship with Camille and Gabriel permanently when his girlfriend found about about their rendez-vous. If Emily had told Gabriel about Camille's kiss, she would have risked chaos again. Not to mention, all Emily saw was a kiss. She didn't know the context of the full situation.
When Mindy Believed Emily Over Her Boyfriend
This season introduces two new characters that play a big role in the lives of the cast. One of them is Nicolas de Leon, a French businessman that Emily is desperate to work with. Nicolas turns out to be Mindy's former boarding school classmate in Switzerland, and after their reunion, she catches his attention. Nicolas's charm proves to have another side to it, and for work reasons, he ends up on bad terms with Emily. This to the point that he makes Emily leave a party to avoid causing a scene.
When Alfie (Lucien Viscount) reveals what happened to Mindy, she instantly apologizes to Emily. I'm not going to lie. I was prepared for this to damage their friendship, but Mindy took the high ground and never questioned her friend. And it paid off because not only did this strengthen her friendship with Emily, but it also improved his relationship with Nicolas.
