Leading with his latest single, Jake Scott announces his headline tour and you won’t want to miss it.
Congrats on your new single, “She’s Not You.” What inspired you to write this song?
Thank you so much!! This song was really an exercise of imagination. I'm happily married, so I pictured what it would feel like if she left me and I tried dating someone new. No matter how great that person might be, they'd never measure up to what I already had, and that would be absolutely devastating.
We know every artist has their own creative process. From coming up with the original idea to recording in the studio, what is your creative process like?
Every song is different, but my process typically starts with a melody. It's by far my favorite part of the process because it's just magic. It feels like anything can happen. I usually sit down with a guitar or piano and start singing gibberish over basic chords until a melody catches my ear. Then I'll start shaping it into the different sections of the song, and I'll try to notice what emotions the melody is evoking: Is it making me feel happy or sad or introspective etc, and that helps me decide what story to tell lyrically. Once it feels solid, I'll turn on the computer, and that's when the hardest part begins - producing the song. I enjoy the production process, but it's always scary trying to get what's in your head into a recording.
We were stoked to see you on the Kelly Clarkson show. With so much happening this year, is there anything special you want to accomplish before 2022 ends?
Thank you! That was such a fun experience, Kelly is the best! This year has been wild and so much has happened, but the biggest thing I want to do is finish up my debut album that I've been working on.
You've worked on a variety of projects in the past few years, all with very different tones and vibes. What would your ideal project look like?
Great question. With this album I'm making right now, I really want it to be a showcase of the things I do best. I want to give the world what I believe is my specific brand of singer/songwriter and pop music. I know this will be a lot of people's first time hearing my music, so I want to make something that feels incredibly natural to me. I'm sure every artist says this, but I really, really believe this is the best music I've ever made!
What are you listening to at the moment? Are there any artists that you look up to and that inspire you?
Wow so many, that's tough! I've been loving the new Harry Styles and Kendrick Lamar albums. I'm also so inspired by Olivia Rodrigo and of course, Taylor Swift. I'm really stoked about where music is going right now. It's a very exciting time to be an artist!
